Why do we so often fear the things we don't yet understand?
The Death's Head Hawkmoth has long carried an unsettling reputation. Its distinctive markings, which resemble a human skull, have inspired centuries of folklore surrounding death, war, and pestilence. Even the unusual screech it makes when distressed was once enough to strike fear into the hearts of those who heard it.
For so long, this moth was misunderstood.
And yet, beneath its eerie reputation and unusual appearance is simply another beautiful piece of nature, one that asks us to look a little closer before deciding what we see.
The Death's Head Hawkmoth has even become something of a pop-culture icon, most famously appearing in The Silence of the Lambs. But long before it found its way onto the big screen, people had already given this fascinating creature a story of their own.
