Growing up, my grandparents had a bird feeder just outside a window by their kitchen island. I fondly remember sitting nearby and watching the countless birds that would come to visit, asking my grandparents about the ones I didn't recognize and slowly learning to notice the differences between them.
Those memories are what sparked my Field Notes series, a collection inspired by the quiet joy of birdwatching and the simple moments spent noticing the natural world. I’ve been adding to the series one bird at a time, and the Eastern Bluebird was the first on my list. As luck would have it, I had a little inspiration right outside my own back door.
Sialia Sialis features illustrations of both the male and female Eastern Bluebird, along with a few of the little facts that make this bird so special. I wanted the piece to feel like something you might find tucked inside an old birder's field notebook—part observation, part keepsake with a touch of vintage charm.
There is something especially lovely about the Eastern Bluebird. Their bright blue coloring and warm rust-colored chests make them a welcome sight, and for me, creating this piece was a way of returning to those childhood moments spent watching birds with my grandparents.
A little piece of nature, a little bit of nostalgia, and a reminder to slow down and notice what is right outside your door.
