Why do butterflies always seem to get the praise for being beautiful when there are moths just as stunning?
Perhaps it is because we tend to notice the bright and colorful things first. Butterflies are often celebrated for their vibrant wings, while moths can be quieter in their coloring and tend to come out when the world around us has grown dark and still.
But beauty isn't always loud. Sometimes it takes a little more time and a little more looking to find.
The Polyphemus moth is a beautiful reminder of that.
This painting captures the beauty of the Polyphemus moth, a species of giant silk moth found throughout North America. Its warm, earthy coloring may be more subtle than the brilliant hues of a butterfly, but look a little closer and there is so much to discover. Delicate patterns stretch across its wings, while its hindwings reveal distinctive eyespots that almost seem to gaze back at you.
With a wingspan reaching up to six inches, the Polyphemus moth is anything but small or ordinary. Yet its beauty is easy to overlook if we aren't paying attention.
I think that is part of what makes moths so special. They remind us that not everything beautiful demands to be noticed. Some things ask us to slow down, look a little closer, and discover the wonder that was there all along.
Beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. We need only take the time to notice it.
