When I was younger, my family traveled west to Arizona and the Grand Canyon. Aside from remembering that my brother and I got the worst sunburns of our lives on that trip, what I remember most are the colors.
I remember the striking red earth, the towering green cacti, the sunset skies, and the sheer size of the landscape surrounding us. Everything felt so different from home, and the Grand Canyon itself seemed almost surreal. I think my mother and I even spent some time joking about tumbleweeds and Fievel Goes West along the way.
I also fondly remember stopping at artisan stands filled with colorful jewelry and handmade works of art on the day we visited the Grand Canyon. I was so excited to choose two little necklaces to bring home, small treasures that somehow made the journey feel even more magical.
Those memories became the inspiration for Desert Dreams I & II.
These pieces capture the beauty of the desert at sunset, when the landscape seems to take on an almost magical glow. A full moon shines brightly overhead, illuminating the towering cacti and distant hills. Subtle yet vibrant splashes of color can be found throughout the landscape, adding depth and texture while bringing some of those colors I remember so fondly back to life.
There is something special about returning to a place through memory. Years may pass, but certain colors, landscapes, and little moments can stay with us. For me, Desert Dreams I & II are a little piece of that family adventure—a memory of wide-open skies, towering cacti, colorful treasures, and a landscape that felt almost surreal.
Sometimes a journey leaves us with more than photographs. Sometimes it leaves us with a feeling we carry with us long after the years have passed.
