Something beautiful about art is that it can be shared. It can cultivate connection. It can stir memories, whether good or bad. It can mean one thing to the person who creates it and something entirely different to the person who sees it.
Foley began with a photo I snapped on my phone in 2024 while on a business trip that my mom was able to join me for. I got to treat her to some delicious food and take her on quite the adventure in search of a beach. Along the way, it became our goal to also find something we both knew would bring my brother joy: palm trees.
The photo was simply a snapshot from a day spent taking my mom to the beach, but I knew it would make him smile. There are certain things in life that have a way of making us pause and think of someone dear to us. For me, palm trees make me think of my brother.
This year, I found myself drawn back to that photo. I wanted to turn that little moment into something more lasting, so I used it as inspiration for Foley, an oil pastel painting created as a birthday gift for my brother.
A fleeting moment can become a memory, and a memory can become something we get to hold onto. Something that began as a simple photo shared between family can become a piece of art, carrying that memory forward and creating a new one in the process.
Perhaps that is part of what makes art so special. We create it from the moments that mean something to us, and then we get to share those moments with someone else.
